How it works

In the US, selling crypto for more than you paid is a capital gain. Hold it more than 1 year and it's long-term (0/15/20% rates); 1 year or less is short-term, taxed like regular income. This answers: "Roughly how much federal tax would I owe on this sale?"

Questions, answered

Is crypto taxed in the US?

Yes. The IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling, trading or spending crypto can create a capital gain or loss.

What's the difference between short-term and long-term?

Assets held more than one year get long-term rates of 0%, 15% or 20% depending on taxable income. Held one year or less, gains are taxed at ordinary income rates (10%–37%). Source: IRS Topic 409.

Which tax year does this use?

2026 federal tax brackets and capital gains thresholds from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (irs.gov), checked October 20, 2026.

What does this not include?

State and local tax, the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax, AMT, credits, other gains/losses and wash/lot-selection details. It's a single-sale estimate, not tax advice.

How do I do my actual crypto taxes?

Use crypto tax software to import all transactions, and consult a tax professional. See our Crypto tax category for tools like Koinly, CoinLedger and TokenTax.
